Cartoonist K.P. Thomas, Thomasettan to the disciples, is no more.
The end came at about 8.30 pm (31/05/2009) at the Indira Gandhi Hospital, Ernakulam where he had been admitted when he had suffered a massive stroke two days back .The young Cartoonist fraternity of Kerala will no more receive sane words from the veteran on need for rationing of words in cartoons or finesse of lines to be honed through long periods of devoted practice ..
The Kerala Cartoon Academy was lucky to have honoured two years back in grandeur at his own hometown, North Paravur. It was a great joy to see Thomasettan readying himself for another hectic stint in cartooning inspired by the ceaseless efforts of the Academy for spreading the message of refined and harmless laughter through the printed lines.
He always wanted to have another try with his famous VEEKSHANAVISHESHAM (വീക്ഷണവിശേഷം/ PERSPECTIVES) and BHAAVANGAL(ഭാവങ്ങള്/POSES) series. Lines & water colours had already started to fall on his beloved large high fibre drawing paper on a pick of his new perspective on the modern Kerala. Breath-taking felicity with the brush, inimitable humour couched in local lingo and finally, those unmistakable Malayalee faces & body language of his characters like in Aravindan's Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum were his signatures.
Shri Thomas has left behind another memorable period in film making during which he produced a handful of avantgarde films including MANIMUZHAKKAM starring the now popular Sreenivasan, for which he bagged the Presidential Gold Medal as Producer.
Thomasettan leaves breaved, his wife and two sons. The Kerala Cartoon Academy joins them in their grief as it did in Thomasettan's happy times.
Cremation will be conducted on tuesday 3.30 p.m. in the St. Mary's Basilica, Semitheri Mukku , Chittoor Road, Ernakulam after resting the body from 10 a.m. in Carmel House opp. the Basilica, for the public to pay homage.
The Kerala Cartoon Academy will be holding a special memorial function on 06.06.2009, saturday , details of which have been given above
