Youth category: PrizeShopping Center Belle Etoile: 500€+trophy. It means a special prize for young people up to 20 years old living in the Grande Région including Wallonia, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Lorraine and Luxembourg.
4. Entries: - Initially each participant can send at most 3 works in digital form via Internet to the following address: cartoon@caricature.eu. The author must indicate in his e-mail the following informations: his first name, last name, his complete address, his e-mail address, his phone number, his birth date, the category and the title or the number of each work. The characteristics of these electronic sendings are as follows: format JPEG, good quality and max. 500 KB per picture.
- Out of these e-mails the jury will make a selection of 90-120 drawings and will request from the authors of these works the sending by mail of the originals for the choice of the prizes and the publication in the catalogue. All these originals will be shown in the exhibition and in the catalogue. Their size will be min. DIN A4 (210x297mm) and max. DIN A3 (297x420mm), good quality paper, not folded and without a passe-partout. On the back side of every work must be clearly mentioned the first name, last name, complete address, e-mail address, phone number, birth date of the author, the category as well as the title or the number of the work. This deadline is 19th March 2010.
5. Technique: Free, black and white or in colour, without subtitles. Digitally created works are accepted. They must be signed by their creator on the back side and be numbered by 1/1. Photos and copies of original works will be eliminated.
6. Exhibition: The award ceremony of the adult category will be held on 7th May 2010 in the castle and the exhibition will take place in the Hall of the Knights of the Castle of Vianden from 8th May until 6th June 2010. It’s foreseen to show the works in other cities and in the Museum of Caricature and Cartoon of Vianden until 9th May 2011.
The award ceremony of youth category will be held during the itinerant exhibition at Shopping Center Belle Etoile in Bertrange from 16th to 25 September 2010.
7. Returns: After these exhibitions the originals will be returned to their authors except the works selected for one of the prizes. The awarded works will become property of the organizer.
The organizer cannot be held responsible for the loss or damage of the return postage.
8. Catalogue: The authors whose works will be selected for the exhibition will receive a free catalogue by mail together with his work(s). Prize winners will get their catalogue during the award ceremony.
9. Results: The publication of the results will be done on the website www.caricature.eu after 8th May 2010. The award winners selected by the jury will be personally informed by e-mail or by phone.
The final decisions of the jury, which will meet on 20th March 2010, are incontestable.
10. Copyright: The selected participants allow the organizers to use their works only for promoting the author, as well as the event. All other copyright remains property of the author.
11. Generalities: The works should not have been awarded before.
By taking part to this contest the participants agree to the abovementioned rules.

Kerala Cartoon Academy gifted a Coffee Table Book titled ‘ 123 Dr Manmohan Singh- by 123 Cartoonists’ to Hon’ble Prime Minister today , The function held at Raj Bhavan Thiruvananthapuram on 3rd January, 2010. 10 Members of Cartoon Academy leaded by- KCA Chairman Presannan Anikkad and Vice Chairman Sathyadev, with senior cartoonists Sukumar and P V Krishnan.KCA executive Members Adv Biju Chandran and Dwijith,G Hari,Harikumar,Devaprakash also in the team of 10 members during the occation.-123 Manmohan Book compiled by Cartoonist Sudheernath,Secretry,Kerala Cartoon Academy.

These cartoons had a common factor – Dr Manmohan Singh; as protagonist, antagonist or even as a victim. This bunch of 123 cartoons and caricatures is a chronicle in its own right, of an atypical PM’s political awakening. Dr.Singh is the central character – his personality, responses, attitude and above all his politics come alive here in a series of signature styles, from the sharp and unsparing to the funny and evocative.

63 cartoons, a little over half, in this collection are from Kerala-based cartoonists who are members of the Academy, the rest are from other states and there are a few from overseas as well. A couple of NRI cartoonists and two woman cartoonists complete the lot.

From the emeritus cartoonist Kutty to the youngest in the business, this collection presents a broad spectrum of Indian cartooning. No claim that we are showcasing the real cross-section though. The academy has to be a lot more organized before it can undertake such ambitious endeavors.

Yet it is a unique look at a major Indian politician by some of the sharpest visual and political minds around. A freewheeling documentation of the unsaid. Particularly so because its central figure, the non-demonstrative Dr. Singh, is no cartoonist’s delight. It took nuclear energy to draw him out. Literally.

His turban, which became the nuclear orbit in many cartoons here, his square face, thick eyebrows, thin beard, spectacles, pullover, white kurtha and pajama – finally a vivid enough picture emerged of the man who is our Prime Minister.

This book may not lead you to a considered view on the nuke deal or its consequences, though individual cartoonists have freely expressed their views. It is a capture of a significant phase of Indian history even as it is unfolding. Some day when you choose to look back, this won’t give you all the facts or weighty insights. But one thing is certain. This won’t bore you. You’ll get a laugh or two at the expense of the man who is receiving this volume as a gift.

It is a great moment of pride for Kerala Cartoon Academy to present this unique collection of 123 cartoons to Hon’ble Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the one who figures on every page of this book.

3:45 PM New Delhi, Jan 1 (IANS) It took the 1-2-3 agreement "to draw him out", and quite fittingly the Kerala Cartoon Academy has prepared a coffee table book with caricatures from 123 cartoonists, ranging from Raj Thackeray to R.K. Laxman, for the usually reticent Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when he comes visiting over the weekend.

The unique New Year gift weighs five kilograms and will be presented to the prime minister on Jan 3 at the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram by the Kerala Cartoon Academy, an association of more than 100 cartoonists that is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Amongst those who have contributed to the tome are E.P. Unny, Ravi Shankar, Ajit Ninan as well as politicos like Raj Thackeray, chief of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Communist Party of India-Marxist’s M.M. Monayee and Muslim League leader M.K. Muneer.

"These cartoons had a common factor - Dr. Manmohan Singh; as protagonist, antagonist or even as a victim," said a Kerala Cartoon Academy statement.

Academy secretary Sudheernath added that the "non-demonstrative Dr. Singh was no cartoonist’s delight". But the signing of Indo-US civil nuclear deal, which prompted the Left parties to withdraw its support to the first United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, changed all that.

"It took the 1-2-3 Agreement and nuclear energy to draw him out. Literally," Sudheernath told IANS.

"His turban, which became the nuclear orbit in many cartoons here, his square face, thick eyebrows, thin beard, spectacles, pullover, white kurta and pajama - finally a vivid enough picture emerged of the man who is our prime minister," said Sudheernath, a Delhi-based cartoonist.

The Kerala Cartoon Academy, in collaboration with the Indian Cartoonists’ Association and the Press Club of India, had organised an exhibition of 123 caricatures of Manmohan Singh at the Club premises here in February last year.

"This bunch of 123 cartoons and caricatures is a chronicle in its own right, of an atypical PM's political awakening," said the Academy.

Manmohan Singh's personality, responses, attitude and above all his politics come alive here, said Sudheernath.

He said the Kerala cartoonists "brainstormed" about the appropriate gift to be presented to the prime minister when they invited him as the chief guest for the valedictory function of the academy's silver jubilee celebrations.

"First we thought of giving 25 cartoons to the PM. When we sent word to brother cartoonists, the response was overwhelming. To the nuclear PM no less than 123," he said.

Sudheernath said 63 cartoons in the book were from Kerala-based cartoonists who were members of the Academy and the rest from other states; there were a few from overseas as well.

A couple of NRI cartoonists and two woman cartoonists complete the lot.

Manmohan Singh, who begins his two-day Kerala visit Saturday, will be inaugurating the 97th Indian Science Congress.

Opinion of the Jury members

The entries received for the caricature contest were in two types, one was in the original and the other was the digital images sent by e-mail.

The Jury did not make any distinction between the types of entries or in the medium chosen or the sizes in which they were made.

The only criteria was how well the participants had drawn the caricatures of Manmohan singh and Sonia Gandhi.

Although most of the works had political comments included, it was decided that only the physical resemblance and the caricature part should be considered. The selected entries were decided exclusively for caricature and not the political comment.

It was a revelation as to how many different types of methods could be used for caricature. Some of them had oil on canvas, some were water colours, some were simple pencil sketches, and some were digitally drawn and painted. Some designed the caricatures with tools from Photoshop. The predominant number of entries had used digital imaging techniques for their works.

It was not mentioned in the contest about the use of photographs for the caricatures. The international cartoons which were quite overwhelming for this contest, for the major part had used the google approach, and used the images which were digitally altered for the caricature. The jury was of the opinion, that this would not give a level playing field for the other caricaturists, but still, considering the talent and ultimate aim of producing a good work, it was accepted in exceptional cases.

The Jury would suggest that in future contests, such a distinction has to be made and the entries to be considered separately.

Broadly, the works were considered on the basis of originality, technique and the idea. It was indeed a pleasure to see the works from all over the globe like USA, Brazil, France, Bulgaria, Romania, Spain, China, Iran, Serbia etc.

Egyptian Cartoonist Sami Mohammed Ali Bedawi-BEDAIWI Died...

Sami Badawi, also known as BEDAIWI, has passed away in 23/6/2009, after he was transferred to the hospital when he got a heart attach and died there.
Bedaiwi is an Egyptian cartoonist. He enriched "October cartoon magazine" with his strong political cartoons, which were mostly without any comments and relied only on the way they were drawn by.
Cartoonist Bedaiwi was discovered by the late cartoonist Hassan Hakem by introducing him on the pages of the first issue of Caricature magazine.
Also Bedaiwi was an active member of international FECO and the Egyptian Cartoonists Association. And he published many books and albums.
A quote from Bedaiwi: "The satire cartoon draws a smile even if it was for few moments, also it has the ability to enlighten the black side of the world which suffers from violence".We lost one of the foundation stones of the middle generation of the cartoonists.Ashes to ashes, dust to dust and may god bless his soul. The Kerala Cartoon Academy will be holding a solemn function in Mass Hotel (Opp North Railway Station) from 4.00 p.m. on the 6th June, Saturday to pay homages to and share hilarious memories on the veteran Cartoonist Thomas who passed away at Ernakulam on Sunday, the 31st May.

The memorial meeting will be attended by Central Minister Prof K V Thomas, State Minister for Culture, Shri M A Baby,Shri P Rajeev MP,MLAs in Ernakulam including the former Chairman of the KCA Shri MM Monaye, S/Shri Sebastian Paul, former MP, veteran Journalist Padma Bhushan Shri TVR Shenoy and a group of cartoon afficianados of Kerala.

All KCA members are requested to treat this as notice and to be present at the function.

Cartoonist K.P. Thomas, Thomasettan to the disciples, is no more.

The end came at about 8.30 pm (31/05/2009) at the Indira Gandhi Hospital, Ernakulam where he had been admitted when he had suffered a massive stroke two days back .

The young Cartoonist fraternity of Kerala will no more receive sane words from the veteran on need for rationing of words in cartoons or finesse of lines to be honed through long periods of devoted practice ..

The Kerala Cartoon Academy was lucky to have honoured two years back in grandeur at his own hometown, North Paravur. It was a great joy to see Thomasettan readying himself for another hectic stint in cartooning inspired by the ceaseless efforts of the Academy for spreading the message of refined and harmless laughter through the printed lines.

He always wanted to have another try with his famous VEEKSHANAVISHESHAM (വീക്ഷണവിശേഷം/ PERSPECTIVES) and BHAAVANGAL(ഭാവങ്ങള്‍/POSES) series. Lines & water colours had already started to fall on his beloved large high fibre drawing paper on a pick of his new perspective on the modern Kerala. Breath-taking felicity with the brush, inimitable humour couched in local lingo and finally, those unmistakable Malayalee faces & body language of his characters like in Aravindan's Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum were his signatures.

Shri Thomas has left behind another memorable period in film making during which he produced a handful of avantgarde films including MANIMUZHAKKAM starring the now popular Sreenivasan, for which he bagged the Presidential Gold Medal as Producer.

Thomasettan leaves breaved, his wife and two sons. The Kerala Cartoon Academy joins them in their grief as it did in Thomasettan's happy times.

Cremation will be conducted on tuesday 3.30 p.m. in the St. Mary's Basilica, Semitheri Mukku , Chittoor Road, Ernakulam after resting the body from 10 a.m. in Carmel House opp. the Basilica, for the public to pay homage.

International Competition of satirical design

1. Trasimeno Blues Festival, presents its first edition of “Trasimeno Blues Cartoon Fest: International competition of satirical design dedicated to Blues”

2. The theme of the competition: “The Blues”

The artwork must be developed on a single table in the maximum size UNI A4 (cm. 21 x 29.7), coloured or black & white. The artworks must not have been published in the past. Participation is for free, open to artists of any nationality. For minors require a permission of a parent or his representative. Each author may participate with one artwork.

Entries must be sent together with the registration form in full, duly completed and signed no later than Sunday 21 June 2009 at:

3. The artworks must indicate on the back: name, surname and address of the author. The artworks will not be refunded. The artworks will be published on the official web sites of the competitin.

4. A Committee will choose the 30 most impressive artworks of the competition. The 30 finalist artworks will be published on official web sites of the competition.

The winner will be declared by online votation.

5. The artworks which make it to the final stage of the competition will be published in the program booklets and will be exhibited for 11 days during the Trasimeno Blues Festival.

The winner will immediately be notified and invited as a guest of Trasimeno Blues Festival, on August 1th to collect the prize.

6. Prizes:

First prize will be a sum of 250 euros and the winning piece will be on front cover of the Trasimeno Blues Festival CD. In the event of a draw, the first prize will be divided between the winners.

7. Every artist must justify the content of their own artwork. The works that the Artistic Director receives could be chosen for publication, distribution and any type of use . Artworks will remain property of the organizing committee. All the competition participants understand and agree to the terms of the competition stated implicitly here, and accept, without any compensation, the exhibition of their artworks in or more shows in the art exhibition and the following publication of the catalogue. They also agreed to its publication in books, posters, bookmarks, t-shirts or cute hats, calendars or agendas and on all the information services. It will be obligatory for the name of the artist and the country of origin and of the name of Trasimeno Blues Caroon Fest to be included in every publication.

8. The Trasimeno Blues Festival while remaining fully committed to the care and protection of the works exhibited , does not take any responsibility for any theft, damage or loss that might occur involving these works from the moment they arrive till the close of the exhibition.

9. Participation in the event which is completely free, implies total acceptance of

these regulations. The Organising Committee has the right and the responsibility to give the final decision concerning controversial questions as well as on matters not explicitly provided for.

Computers are wonderful tools. With a computer anyone with an imagination can create almost anything they like and then make it come to life. People that cannot take a good photograph to save their lives can use computer software to create the illusion that they have taken some of the most interesting photographs ever taken. By the same account people with absolutely no ability to draw at all can create entertaining cartoons by using the cartoon creator software of their choice. These kinds of advances in computer software can open up doors to people that were closed for a very long time and it can also bring some pressure to people that have been considered specialists all of their careers. Using cartoon creator software can help people that have good cartoon ideas bring their ideas to life and maybe even create a whole new dimension to their careers. If a comedian feels he has a lot of funny ideas for a cartoon but cannot draw then that comedian can turn to cartoon creator software and bring his ideas to life. Suddenly the comedian realizes that his cartoon ideas are funny and now a person that could never draw suddenly finds themselves making cartoons seen in newspapers all over the country. The above scenario seems great for people with ideas but no drawing skills but it certainly puts a lot of pressure on people that draw cartoons for a living but may not have the same comedic talents as a professional comedian. Suddenly cartoonists that were getting by primarily on their ability to draw are finding themselves challenged by people that have what the public really wants out of their cartoons and that is good comedy. In this way cartoon creator software could change the way cartoonists approach their work. Software used to create cartoons has also had an aggressive impact on the animation world. It used to be that animators could create cartoons that were funny but not necessarily in line with current events. Using the old techniques of hand drawing it takes months to create on 30 minute cartoon show and for this reason most cartoons were not based on current events but they would throw references in there once in a while to try and seem current. Cartoon creator software has changed all of that and now what used to take months to create and animate only takes days and animators are forced to make their cartoons in line with current events or risk a short run on television. Some animators have embraced this animating speed and have built their reputation on being able to create cartoons that are right in line with up to the day current events. Other cartoons that try and interject current events without using cartoon creator software find themselves behind the times and not nearly as popular as the more up to date cartoons. It is a true statement when people say that computers are changing the way we live and the way that we interact with each other on a daily basis.
